Communicating Rapid Diagnostic Test Results to the Healthcare Team with Clinical Surveillance Software: A U.S. Community Hospital Case Study
Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy
September 19, 2024
Summary:
This study outlines the procedural optimization of the post-analytical phase of rapid diagnostic tests (RDT), and evaluates if the combination of RDT with a real-time antimicrobial stewardship team (AST) using a clinical surveillance solution can improve the time to appropriate therapy in bloodstream infections (BSIs).
This single-center study was conducted by Cone Health, a regional healthcare system with five acute care hospitals, two free-standing emergency departments (EDs), several urgent care centers, and a large network of physician practices.
The findings revealed that the combination of RDT, AST support, and clinical surveillance software can greatly aid in improving the timing of appropriate antibiotic therapy in patients with BSIs. Clinical pharmacists with appropriate training and support effectively communicated the results and treatment recommendations to the attending physician, allowing for early pathogen-directed antimicrobial therapy.
Why this matters:
In 2015, bloodstream infections (BSIs) were the 11th leading cause of mortality in the U.S. Growing rates of antimicrobial resistance put patients at higher risk of mortality when treating BSIs, and lead to increased costs for the healthcare system.
This study highlights the value of RDT, AST support, and clinical surveillance software working together to improve BSI care outcomes. The findings go beyond the walls of Cone Health – they are an important signal to other health systems, sharing what is possible when the appropriate teams and technology are working together to advance care outcomes.
