Fragility fractures in women diagnosed with osteoporosis are associated with significant healthcare burden during and after post-acute care (PAC including skilled nursing facility, inpatient rehabilitation, long-term acute care hospital, and home health care agency). A retrospective observational administrative claims database study (2017-2019) of 100% Medicare-Fee-For Service female patients assessed resource utilization, cost, and outcomes. The observed high resource use and costs following fracture and discharge from PAC; underutilization of bone density scans and osteoporosis medications before and after fracture; small improvement in functional status and pain levels during skilled nursing facility stay; and insufficient education about fracture risk highlight the need for better disease management to avoid incident fragility fractures in women with osteoporosis.
