MVP Health Care Cuts HEDIS® Reporting From 3 Weeks to 6 Days
MVP Health Care (MVP) is a regional, non-profit health insurer that offers government sponsored, Medicare Advantage, and individual and employer sponsored health plans across New York and Vermont. Previously, every month, its analytics team spent three weeks doing one thing: wrestling data into a usable state. The process was manual, fragile, and spread across three separate teams. This long timeline left little room for improving member outcomes.
In August 2025, MVP added Inovalon Healthcare Data Lake™ as its primary data warehouse. The results were immediate. Processing time fell from three weeks to six days. Senior quality leaders agree, this was a much-needed improvement to MVP’s digital processes.
A Slow, Fragile Process Holding Quality Teams Back
Before adopting Inovalon Healthcare Data Lake, MVP’s approach to HEDIS® data management relied on MRE file outputs. Every month, the team had to configure and maintain hundreds of individual files by hand. When Suzanne Beck, Director of Quality and Strategic Analytics at MVP, joined the team in 2024, she quickly identified that the data workflow was limiting what her team could do and that the process often broke or failed. “Managing hundreds of files on a monthly basis just was not an efficient process for MVP,” Beck said.
The results were predictable: a three-week monthly cycle that produced low-quality results, frequent failures that broke downstream refreshes, and analysts spending their time troubleshooting files instead of producing insights.
At the same time, MVP was simultaneously undergoing a broader data transformation, migrating its data models to a new data intelligence platform. A centralized, structured architecture wasn’t just desirable. It was necessary for sustained success.

Enter Inovalon Healthcare Data Lake
MVP was already an Inovalon customer, using Converged Quality™ since 2018, and Beck had previously worked with the company. When she evaluated alternatives, one fact stood out: most HEDIS software vendors don’t offer a data lake.
Inovalon Healthcare Data Lake’s centralized, table-based architecture fits directly into MVP’s data intelligence platform strategy. “Just knowing that a data lake was out there and we could easily transform the way we use the data without having to go through an RFP or change vendors alleviated the need to go through other complex processes,” Beck said.

Simple, Fast, and Personalized Implementation
When it came time to start setting up a data lake within MVP’s workflow, the configuration process was smooth each step of the way. During the handful of group meetings between MVP’s staff and Inovalon’s data lake team, each side got to know each other, developing working relationships on a first-name basis. “This stands out as one of the easiest programs I have implemented in my history working with software vendors,” Beck continued.

Results That Can Be Measured in Money and Time Saved
Once Inovalon Healthcare Data Lake was live, results came fast. MVP’s monthly HEDIS processing cycle dropped from three weeks to six days, covering extract generation, data loading, Inovalon processing, and ingestion into the data intelligence platform. And what once required three internal teams now involves one engineer.
“My team wasn’t working effectively or efficiently with the programs they had,” Beck said. “They were wrangling MRE files and troubleshooting problems. Now they’re focused on informatics and analytics which furthers our overall production.”
Before, MVP monitored 185 individual monthly claims files. Now, its data governance team accesses all claims through four consolidated view tables: medical claim, pharmacy claim, lab, and electronic clinical data systems (ECDS). “We were leaving a lot of data behind and not accessing it because it was too difficult to get to,” Beck said. “It’s a very easy, efficient, well-laid-out, well-designed data lake.”

From Measure-Level to Member-Level Quality Improvement
Inovalon Healthcare Data Lake is accelerating a strategic shift at MVP. Instead of treating all members with a given chronic condition the same, the organization is now building toward quality at the individual member level.
This aligns with MVP’s strategy for the future of health care. Clinical and informatics teams now see individual member needs, prescriber information, and full medical history. The dashboards built this year reflect a level of clinical specificity that the old workflow couldn’t support.
“The number one benefit is faster access to more actionable data, something that would not have been possible without Inovalon’s Data Lake,” said Beck. “We truly appreciate their partnership because it enables MVP to provide better health care and build healthy communities across our footprint.”
