Quick Navigation
Artificial Intelligence (AI) was undoubtedly the star of the show at HIMSS 2024, dominating presentations and conversations throughout the event with its potential to revolutionize healthcare. From personalized care plans to streamlined operations, every corner of the convention center buzzed with talk of leveraging AI for the benefit of patients and providers alike.
Robert Garrett, CEO, Hackensack Healthcare, opened HIMSS 2024 with a keynote sharing his bold vision for AI, highlighting its potential to improve access to care, enhance outcomes, and even address pressing issues like health equity and climate change. However, he stressed the importance of implementing ethical safeguards to ensure that AI serves humanity responsibly.
Additional key themes from HIMSS 2024 included a greater focus on interoperability, the increasing importance of addressing workforce challenges, and the growth of “hospital at home.”
Interoperability’s slow ramp up
The excitement surrounding AI has forced providers to focus on a long-time problem that can no longer be ignored: the slow progress of interoperability in healthcare.
Although strides have been made to improve connectivity and interoperability, the journey to seamless (and secure) data exchange remains hindered by disparate systems throughout the care continuum. Providers must develop a roadmap to address their data silos and improve interoperability within their organization.
It’s up to each provider group to take a focused look at their systems and consider:
- How many separate tools support one process?
- What tools or steps can be consolidated or connected to each other?
- How can software support staff in achieving more efficiency and better patient care?
And of course, where can AI be leveraged to further drive interoperability efforts? While there is much to assess, providers don’t have to answer these big questions alone. The rising adoption of cloud-based technology in healthcare is helping organizations make strides in achieving interoperability. Cloud software solutions are the catalyst to breaking down disparate systems, bringing providers into a more modern, connected working environment to achieve their key objectives.
Addressing ongoing staffing concerns (and more) with software
On the workforce front, burnout and talent shortages continue to be a concern for all providers. Staff is stretched thin, from nurses and clinicians to administrators and billers all feeling the strain.
It’s imperative for providers to find new ways to support their staff – and many conversations at HIMSS 2024 focused on improving staff scheduling. Spreadsheets and phone calls are no longer enough. These scheduling “solutions” are outdated and disruptive, and nurses now expect a more modern system to communicate their scheduling needs. It’s time for providers to embrace more agile, optimized scheduling solutions such as cloud-based workforce management.
Additionally, cloud tech can better support staff throughout their work. Taking a tech-first approach can alleviate frustrations and time-consuming tasks in workforce management, patient access, claims management, and even patient payments. Software is turning manual processes into easy steps. From improving nurse support and scheduling, to making it easier for billers to offer consumer-friendly payment options, cloud technology is ultimately improving the care journey for all.
Hospital at home gaining traction
Among the major themes from HIMSS 2024 was hospital at home. This care model is quickly gaining traction in the marketplace, and it’s blurring the traditional lines of care.
Amid a growing number of Baby Boomers, hospital at home offers patients an option for the care they need in the setting they prefer. While it’s a comforting concept for patients, it has introduced unique challenges for providers who are still adjusting to delivering high-quality care in the home. Healthcare organizations must continue to explore this care model while prioritizing access and equity in healthcare delivery.
Looking ahead
Overall, HIMSS 2024 showcased the promise and challenges of harnessing technology to transform healthcare, with AI leading the charge toward a more efficient, equitable, and patient-centered future.
As we reflect on the key themes of the conference, it’s clear that the path ahead requires a collaborative effort. Providers must embrace innovation, working closely with technology partners to harness the power of cloud-based software and AI to address current challenges and drive the industry forward.
